The Problem
Connecticut Department of Transportation Maintainers do not receive the recognition they deserve, and there is lack of awareness about the awesome work they do.
-
Lack of Clarity on Maintainer Role
Lack of clarity on the State of Connecticut job title “Maintainer”, and the job requirements.
-
Lack of Awareness on Maintainer's Roles in Snowstorms
Lack of public awareness regarding what happens during snowstorms. For example, maintainers may stay on-call 2-3 days straight and spend time away from their families to plow highways and state roads in order to keep us safe.
-
Limited Visibility on Work Completed
During the summer months they repair guardrails, potholes, pave, cut down overhanging foliage blocking visibility, and pick up debris on the side of the road.
-
Many Open Positions
There are many open positions within the state.
-
Maintainer Safety Issues
There are safety concerns because maintainers can be hit by cars, and many have died as a result of careless drivers. Their deaths were preventable.
The Solution
Name the Snowplow Campaign to highlight maintainers or “snowfighters,” while also increasing CTDOT brand awareness. Also, the contest was a fun way to engage the public with CTDOT in a positive light.
-
Communications Plan & Design
Deliverables included: communications plan, press release, children’s flyer, social media graphics and content
-
Clarity on Maintainer job role
Clarity on what a State of Connecticut “Maintainer” is and what is their role or job description.
-
Links to Apply for Role
Links to apply for the maintainer role on the State of Connecticut website
-
Social Media Awareness Campaign
Name the snowplow social media posts with a chance to name your own snowplow and vote on the winning name. Also, there was an opportunity to meet maintainers and learn more about their roles, and which garage they work out of.
-
New Stories
New stories about the contest and public awareness of the lack of shortage of snowplow drivers, and descriptions on how to apply through news.
Measurement Results
The campaign was successful based on the 10,000 views on social media, it was shared by multiple news outlets, and prominent people in Connecticut shared it on their social media pages.
