Case Study - Women in Transportation
When I was hired for the CTDOT they wanted someone that could bring diversity, equity, and inclusion to the team through visual communication design. However, upon arrival, it became obvious that the “Old Boys Club” was still very prominent and women were the minority. They may have wanted change, but they weren’t ready for it.
Women, like me were looked down upon, and it was utterly awful walking through the hallways, as men starred me up and down like I was a piece of meat. The women weren’t that much better, at least the women in my department. They didn’t want to see other women succeed or be noticed by elected officials. So they made sure you stayed in their lane and didn’t shine too bright.
I created the first ever “Women in Transportation” campaign, which highlighted women in transportation who made great contributions to the industry. The campaign included: social media posts, a communications plan with smartie goals, and press release.
My plan was initially rejected and the communications department, chief of staff, and deputy commissioner refused to review it. Nothing like this had ever been done before.
Eventually, certain elements, like the social media went live and were liked by prominent women in DC.
Why was this important? Because women are still the minority in the transportation industry, and work in a male dominated field. What does this mean? When you are woman working in a male dominated field, most men don’t understand the needs of mothers and caretaking. For example, I was written up because I took time off to take care of my sick son, and I had a to leave early a couple of times to pick up my son for doctor’s appointments. If you think about this, most males don’t traditionally take on the responsibilities of a mother, therefore, they don’t understand the responsibilities.
